Women in canoe, Lake Horowhenua, c1930

Letter (information) writtten with black pen: “Maori canoe amongst raupo at north end of Horowhenua Lake, early 1930’s (approached from angle of Kawiu Road, east side of swamp). The young woman were – Frances Pyke (later Mrs M. Duguid), Probably, Nancy Trisleton, Beverley Aplin (later Mrs M. or W. Barclay), One at far end of canoe, Lynne York (later Mrs E.S. Beverly). Would not know whether it was in use at that time, though obviously there was a paddle. The canoe did not appear to be waterproof. F.D.”

Three women in Maori waka at Lake Horowhenua, c 1930. The photograph has been taken from the north end of the lake looking south. The large trees in the centre of the photograph mark the site ot Te Rae o te Karaka pa on the western shore of the lake. The three women have been identified as Nancy Trisleton, Beverley Aplin and Lynne Yorke.

Note above photograph reads: “Taken from the jetty. The white line as the left, behind the boat, is a concrete wall at the edge of the water. Standing on this wall one could look into the clear shallow water at the pebbly lake bed!”
