Visit of Lord Jellicoe

Written on the reverse of the smallest mounted photograph is: “Betty Taylor (nee Fryer) 20 Cambell St Palmerston North.” This is written in red over other faded writing, which reads: “This is a view taken when Lord Jelicoe visited Foxton. You can see Mr (?) right on the right hand edge with Dick standing on the chain fence. Mr Hobbs is ? me with a white hat on Mr and Mrs Bang are on the footpath ? a pram. Mr Ross holding a ? girl in his arms. Mrs Cave Rand is just standing ? the ? You cant miss”

A large crowd is gathered on the corner of Park Street and Avenue Road to celebrate the visit of Lord Jellicoe to Foxton c.1920. A dias has been set up at the front of the World War I memorial. Motor cars and horses and gigs feature as transportation in this photograph. The Town Hall, Methodist Church and the town’s fire bellare visible in the background.

Printed bottom of photo, as caption: “The Post Office, about the early 20s if the traffic is anything to go by.”

Levin Post Office, on the south – eastern corner of the intersection of Oxford Street and Quee Street, Levin, c.1921. Two men ride their horseswhile another drives his buggy. Two cars are shown in Queen Street, while bicycles lean against the building. Three men are leaning on a lampost outside the front entrance to the building.

Plane trees and telegraph poles feature in this photo of Oxford Street, with many businesses having two storied buildings, some with ornate decoration. A number of forms of transport are shown, nine cars, a horse and trap, a horse and gig a bicycle and a motorbike with sidecar.
