e) J.A. Roach’s Bakery, Plimmer Terrace, early 1900’s. {copy} John Alfred Roach (centre) arms folded and wearing long white apron with his wife Jane (nee retter) at right holding baby Eva. Believed to be Alf Jenkins standing by horse & cart. 2 unidentified men – one wearing white apron (probably assistant), other wearing dark suit (right). Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 180, with caption - Johnny Roach, in long apron, stands outside his original bakery in Plimmer Terrace, with Mrs roach and baby in arms, in the early 1900s. {also see pages 179 to 181 for brief history.} Book states wife is Jane (nee Retter) while other sources state wife is Sybil (nee Retter). Gunning, Draper and General Merchant store, Plimmer Terrace, c.1920. {copy} Ten people stand on the footpath in front of the shop (L – R): ?_ , _? , ?_ , Eric Gunning, Miss Phyllis Gunning, Mr Box, _? , Mr W.H. Gunning, Ted Exton, ? . Information on page 173 in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, states: ... in 1901 he [Mr W.H. Gunning] and a partner, Mr Kiddle, purchased the Manawatu Supply Store from John Powell. In 1903 Gunning bought out Kiddle. An upper storey was added to the drapery side of the shop, and about 1912 the name changed to W.H. Gunning and Company Limited. ... Until his death in 1940, W.H. Gunning was in control of the business….. many outside factors resulted in the closure of the store and it was sold in 1973. {see pages 173 to 177 for brief history of W.H.
