An elargement of a coloured postcard showing a bullock team pulling a log along The Avenue, north of Levin. The team consisted of ten beasts, with one man, Billy Blows walking alongside the team, while the second man, Happy Russell sits atop the log on the wagon.

Used in book – ‘Horowhenua County and its People’, page 173, with caption - Bullock wagon at Heatherlea, north of Levin, early 1890’s. Note state of main road, Levin to Foxton – formed but unmetalled. ATL.

A bullock team hauls logs along The Avenue north of Levin, c.1890. Two unidentified men are with the bullock team, one stands at the head of the team with a whip, while the second rides a horse alongside the team. The hills in the background are covered with native bush.

Bullock Team Pulling Log, The Avenue, Levin

Written on back with blue ballpoint pen: “The driver of the team was known as Billy Blows & the man on the log as Hoppy Russell.”

Also written back with black ink pen: “Levin, December 20 / 1910. Dear Fred, I will come up with the first train on Saturday morning to help you shift. From your brother, Frank.”

Also stamped on back with blue ink – Horowhenua Historical Society.
