Top to bottom (L to R) - a) Entrance to tunnel, scene of tragic accident on Sunday evening, 2 July 1922. {copy} Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 120, with caption - This photo shows the entrance to the No. 2 tunnel in which owing to the breakdown of the ventilating fans seven men were asphyxiated by fumes from a pumping engine. Pages 114 & 115 in book – “From Bush & Swamp” has the full story of this tragedy. Page 258 in book – “Horowhenua County and its People” also has the story. The 7 deceased men are identified as: J. Bernard (‘Bernie’) Butler (pump man), A.E. Maxwell (tunnel foreman), F. (‘Jock’) Graham, Philip Graham, W.R. (‘Triggy’) Miller (assistant engineer), Fred Birss and his son, W. (‘Billy’) Birss.
