TALA Record -'Lace Covered Windows"

One of the smallest record labels in the country, TALA was set up in Levin in 1957. In the beginning it stood for 'To Assist Levin Artists' but, with few local acts coming forward, it was changed to 'To Assist Local Artists'. Either way, this label had around forty releases, each featuring New Zealand artists.

The label's owner, Wally Clark, was quick to pick up on international trends in music and always found local bands who were playing the right tune. This particular tune is by the Warren Sisters who were one of Clark's original TALA talents. 'Lace Covered Windows' was released in around 1968 and was among the last TALA releases.

Wally Clark was also a professional photographer who also cornered the Levin TV hire market- a very busy man!

Te Kowhai Reception Lounge- Cinema Advertising Slide

Unlike most of MAVtech's cinema advertising slides this one kindly has a date on it! It was issued or screened on the 1st of December 1968. This striking looking slide would have looked fantastic on the big screen where it would have been shown for a few seconds during the end of intermission.

The 'Te Kowhai Reception Lounge' is no longer with us- a Kete post from 2011 shows bare land where the building used to be. As of March 2023 some third party business directories still show it with one mentioning it was 'set in spacious grounds with glorious native bush' with a capacity to seat 120.

One of Field's Apiaries in the Wanganui Valley area

The 1967 - 68 season. These bee hives were harvesting Manuka honey in the Wanganui Valley. At that time it was regarded as poor quality honey and only used to supplement feed bee hives in winter, sold to bakers or used to blend with clover honey

Field's Apiaries 1967-68 Honey Crop

Field's Apiaries 1967-68 Honey Crop stored in kerosene tins as was the usual practice then. About 32 tons here whatever that is in Kilos?

An apiary of Field's Apiaries, Foxton,1967-68 season

Most of Field's apiaries were scattered through the Manawatu area and were usually around 20 hives in each apiary. When I worked there in the 1967-68 season they had about 1300 hives in total. They were all standard 10 frame Langstroth hives. We didn't use queen exluders in any of them and neither did we have a mechanical loader. All hives and full honey boxes were manually lifted onto the flat tray Ford truck seen here.

1968 Demolition of house in Queen Street, Levin

Demolished in 1968 to make way for extensions to the legal offices of Park, Cullinane and Turnbull, this old house in Queen Street is thought to have been built in the first decade of this century.

In 1913, according to Mrs Francis Duguid, "Old Bob" a pensioner, lived in it and then about 1915, it was occupied by the McDonald family. Mr McDonald was a saddler and his only daughter, Mary, married local power board employee, Maurie Brown, who was a well-known cricketer. In the 1920s, Fred Proctor and his wife and two children lived in the house and it was then occupied for many years by the late Mrs Elizabeth Hornblow until she died there in November, 1948.

The property passed to her son, Mr S. Beetson who sold it to Otaki dental surgeon, Mr H. Jackson, in 1949. Besides Mr Jackson, Mr Boyd, the optometrist, had rooms there before moving to a property further along the street.
