Top to bottom - a) Group of unidentified children outside Shannon Post Office, c.1906. {copy} Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 57, with caption - A group of children gather outside the home of Mr and Mrs O. Harrison, which was also Shannon’s first permanent post office. This is now the site of the public library and Horowhenua County Council office. The present post office was built to the left of this building in 1911. (see also – Acc.#s2002.073.0002 additional copies)
b) Three men outside Shannon Post Office, c.1907. {copy} Left to Right: Mr E. Kear, Mr Octavius Louis Harrison (Postmaster) and Mr C. Dunkley. House built by Mr Harrison in 1898, he was also appointed postmaster that year. Additions to building were later made by Post and Telegraph Department who later purchased the building in 1907 and appointed new postmaster in February 1909. c) Post Office, Plimmer Terrace, Shannon c.1920. {copy} Situated on the eastern side of Plimmer Terrace, it is a wooden building with an ornamented concrete frontage, with several men standing on the footpath outside. (see also – Acc.#s2001.013.0001 original postcard)
d) Plimmer Terrace looking south from Albion Hotel, c.1920 (?) {copy} Group of children on the street outside the hotel. Appears to be the rebuilt hotel after fire in 1915. Enlargement of the top left picture on photo postcard titled “Greetings from Shannon” showing four views of Shannon. (see also – Acc.#s2002.038.0001 original postcard)
e) James Gardner, Butcher, outside his shop on Nathan Terrace, c.1892. {copy} James Gardner is in the centre of the photograph wearing a white apron and sharpening a knife. An unidentified man is on a horse carrying a basket on his arm. According to information on the reverse of the original photograph the two girls to the left could be Glad and Allie. Also in the photograph are three dogs. Information on page 178 in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, states: James Gardner, his wife and children moved from Pauahatanui to Shannon in 1892 and began a butchery in George Gray’s old shop on Nathan Terrace. Gardner was unable to carry on as a butcher after he was injured in an accident, and the premises were leased to S.W. Carter in 1896, where he began trading as Shannon Meat Company. f) Fred Thomson, Painter & Paperhanger, outside his shop, 1920’s (?) {copy} Information on page 202 in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, states: Fred Thomson operated a painting and paperhanging business from 1901 until 1940, when it was taken over by his two sons Ken and Jim.
g) View of Shannon from Thompson Street, 1920’s ? {copy} Presbyterian Church and Railway Station are visible (centre) with B.N.Z. building between them in the background. Enlarged view of centre part of photo – Acc.#s2002.077.0002
h) Plimmer Terrace looking north, 1912. {copy} Some of the buildings (L -R): W.H. Gunning, Fargher & Co., Post Office. Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 52, with caption - A view of Plimmer Terrace c.1912. The original Albion Hotel still standing in the far left of the photograph, and there are a number of business premises in the dip between the Albion and Gunning’s store.
