New Years Day Sports, Foxton Beach

Inscription on one copy reads: “NEW YEAR’S DAY SPORTS, MANAWATU HEADS, 1916. This photograph, taken on the foreshore , shows the Methodist Hall, built in 1909 in the background.”

The last ten words have a blue line through them.

Two boys walk towards a number of cars and a crowd of people at the New Years Day Sports Day held at the Manawatu Heads 1916. In the background to the right is a wooden church with a steep iron roof.

Unidentified Woman and Child

Inscription on reverse reads: “Wellington 1916.”

Small photograph which appears to have been cut to fit a frame, featuring an unidentified woman and child holding hands in a formal setting. The woman on the left has a dark jacket over the top of a white blouse with a fine lace collar. She has a fine necklace and a white hat with a large brim. The child (of indeterminable sex) is wearing a white shirt with a knotted tie at the neck, and has shoulder length hair. Inscription on reverse reads: “Wellinton 1916.”

Machinery, Brown's Flax Mill, Waikanae, 1916

Penciled on back: “Machinery in Brown’s mill, 1916, ‘Paetawa’ Waikanae. In 1915 old steam engine caught fire and was destroyed. This is the new gas suction engine. A.A. Brown set up mill about 1900 on 400 acres of flax. Each patch left for 4 years between cuttings. In 1920’s swamps drained for faster growth and yellow leaf disease attacked plant roots. Mill closed in 1927.”
