Right:
Hector Roderick (Kita) McDonald astride his horse at the rear of the Grand Hotel, corner of Oxford and Durham Street
Inscription on reverse "The 3rd Hector McDonald. Probably taken the same day as the photo of him riding into the Grand Hotel. Same Horse.
Left: Hector McDonald III ( son of R A McDonald) on a horse called "Promise" outside The Grand Hotel, Levin.
Photograph taken by Mrs Biddy Wylie, on Durham Street.
The horse belonged to Gordon Wylie, Len Wylie's son. Gordon later went on to become the drummer in the band called "The Simple Image" which went on to tour Australia and New Zealand.
The publican's name was Franche, always wore a beret, a foreigner. The horse went in down a narrow passage and into the front bar, to great hilarity. Franche ordered him out - chased him out, which is when Mrs Wylie took the photograph.
On the ground you can see the cover of the slipway which was used to lower the 56kg wooden 'hogsheads' or barrels of beer, by ropes, down into the the cellar.
