Policemen lived here:

| A house with close associations with the early policemen in Levin was moved from town in 1976 to a property at Muhunoa East. It came from Stanley Street and was originally built by Me O'Rourke about the turn of the century. At one time, Mr O'Rourke was a police constable at Otaki. Early occupants of the house were Constable Gray and later Constable Bagrie. According to Mrs F.C. Duguid, when the house was in Stanley Stree, was occupied by Constable Bagrie, the section extended to the corner of Bristol and Stanley Streets. "Two lockups were standing in the yard. They do not seem to have been used very often, as one was used as a storeroom for fowl food. "There was no buiolding for a police station, so the home of Mr Bagrie was called the police station. About 1919, the family moved to a large corner house at the north east corner of Bristol Street and Exeter Street. (This was definitely before 1920. From 1917 - 1919 I played with Eileen Bagrie and visited both houses frequently. From 1920 I was away at school, and the association was broken). |
