Foreword By R. W. A. FROST, A.M.Inst.B.E., A.M.I.M.I., I.A.M.E.

NO sport can claim a greater public following in the world today than Motor Racing. In Europe, crowds of nearly a million are quite common-place. The imagination of the public is captured by the immensity of the challenge that Motor Racing represents to the competitor, from the time the first spanner is used in his workshop, months before the season starts, to the time when the flag is lowered as he crosses the finishing-line. In the last five years, Motor Racing in New Zealand has risen suddenly from the comparative obscurity of activities which have been confined largely to hill-climbs, beach-racing and sprints, to the level of fully-fledged Grand Prix type meetings. Much of this sudden impetus has been given to the sport by a band of far-seeing and enterprising enthusiasts in Auckland, who in 1954, staged New Zealand's first International Grand Prix at Ardmore. That this event, which is now an annual one, and which has full recognition from the International governing body of the motor-racing sport, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, was an unqualified success is, of course, now history. Another body which has done much to further the sport in the North Is/and is the Manawatu Car Club, which has to date, staged four annual events at Ohakea, all of which have been a great success. In the South Island it is the Motor Racing Club of Christ-church, with their annual Lady Wigram race held at Wigram. Aerodrome, which has kept the flag flying. Here in Levin, another band of enterprising enthusiasts have taken things yet a step farther, and rightly feel proud in having built the first permanent, real motor-racing circuit in the Dominion. 'Real,' because, up to the present, circuits have been confined exclusively to non-permanent makeshift venues such as Aerodromes, and 'Round-the-houses' in built-up areas. The rights to use these types of circuits are subject, from year to year, to the dictates of such authorities as Local Bodies and the Govern-ment. Whilst this co-operation has always been gratefully acknowledged, from the viewpoint of the man who purchases an expensive racing-car, this has been hardly a satisfactory state of affairs. It is our hope, with the support of the public, to run several meetings annually, during the months November-March, thus giving drivers the opportunity of getting much more practice than they have been able to do hitherto. And practice is the chief ingredient of success as a racing-driver. Incidentally, it is interesting to contemplate that it is more expen-sive to practice in a racing-car than it is to race it; there is no prize-money for practising! It is our earnest hope that you will enjoy seeing Motor Racing on a real motor-racing circuit, designed on the same lines as several of the most popular venues in the U.K. It is three and a half years since this idea was first suggested to the Levin Racing Club, on whose property this track is built, and with their kind co-operation, many problems have been overcome in order that this idea may reach fruition. If the results obtained from it are in proportion to the effort that has been expended, we shall feel that our venture has been more than amply rewarded. PRESIDENT, Levin Car Club (Inc.)
