Tea break for weary soldiers on the back of the Star Ford C Cab truck used by the New Zealanders. Will is known to have shared a trench with Gil Adkin, a member of the Levin Adkin family who sadly did not make it home. A letter from Gil remarks on "Lucky" Will Whitaker who got trench foot and was sent home to Blighty. On that occasion Will was invited, with other servicemen, to afternoon tea with the King.

The Star Ford C Cab (American Built) truck was used by the New Zealand Soldiers. Here some weary diggers pose for a photograph while enjoying a tea break on the back of the truck. Will Whittaker is thought to be one of the boys on the truck. This image came back with him at the end of his war service.

While he was in France he sent home gifts for his sister, an embroidered silk scarf and an embroidered silk handkerchief sachet. Both of these are now in the possession of his daughter.
