We regret to hear of the death of Mr Vincent C. Ransom, a well-known ■settler, who resided for many years in the Ilongotca district and recently removed to Levin. Mr Ransom, who. arrived in this district in 1878, lias always been a prominent settler, devoting a lot of. his time and attention to public matters and also in connection with the Rongotea Dairy Company. Being energetic, he soon worked up a desirable property at Rongotea, and Mr Ransom went into the dairying business extensively. He was at various times, while resident at Rongotea, chairman of the School Committee, the Mana■watu County Council, the Cemetery Board and the dairy tactory. He was ■born in London in 1852 and came to the -colony in 1554 in the Cornwall. He landed at Wellington and then went ■with his parents to the Hutt, where he wes educated. In'-d875 he married Miss Knight, of. the Lower Hutt, and they had six boys and three girls born to them. The late Mr Ean-om was .greatly^ esteemed throughout the district. Though of a quiet and unassuming nature he had a great hold upon local politics and matters generally, and his foresight and keen business aptitude was not only beneficial to himself but also to the numerous business concerns be was associated' with at different times. His comparatively early decease will be greatly ,regretted by a large number of sincere friends.
