The Evening Post of 12 April 1904 reported:

FIRE AT LEVIN. SIX BUSINESS PREMISES DESTROYED.

LEVIN, This Day.

Another fire broke out at Levin at 4 o'clock this morning, and destroyed six places of business. It commenced in Hall's drapery shop, and spread to Clarkson's "Byko," Wilson's fruit shop, Smith's stables, James's bootmaker shop, and Staveley's office. The premises of Jones (plumber) and Newman and Devine (butchers) were much scorched. Wilson's furniture shop was broken up considerably in the hopes of making a gap to stay the fire from attacking Clark's drapery establishment, but the brigade stayed the fire at the butchery. All goods of any value were saved.
