(Beautifully worded by Dorothy Baker)The following is the First Response to the Newspaper Advertisement about this book: (from a Dad!)
Dear Fran,
I saw the article in the Manawatu Evening Standard
about the Foxton Maternity Home and although you
probably have plenty of photos the enclosed is one I
took of my wife Colleen and son with Sister Archibald
when I picked them up to come home on 2nd July
1967.
Doctor Malthus was Colleen's doctor. We had two
sons born at the Foxton Maternity Home. Scott and
Guy. (1967 & 1969).The enclosed photograph indicates two weeks from
birth date to home-going date, which was the norm in
that era. Sister Archibald would tell Colleen that, "This
is the last rest you will have, so make the most of it!"
We lived at Himatangi Beach at the time. I was
commuting to RNZAF Ohakea with several other Air force
guys that lived at Foxton and Himatangi.
Good Luck with Your Book.
Kind Regards,
Colleen and Ian Harding. (Some editing by the author.)A Perk
I remember having my 21st birthday at the Home and my parents and some of their friends arriving with gifts for me and the baby and Hettie (the Cook) had made a Birthday Cake for me which was a great surprise.I don't know who provided the ingredients for it but it was enjoyable!
Maybe a Palmerston North Hospital Board Perk..?
Thanks Betty Taylor (nee Shailer) (Former nurse- aid)
