Top to bottom - a) United Box Company Ltd. factory (Nathan Terrace) destroyed by fire, 1957. {copy} View showing destroyed truck in the foreground with damaged machinery in background. Fire occurred in the early morning on 18 September 1957. Some machinery was salvaged and in use a week later. Following year (1958) amalgamated with the Empire Box Co. Ltd. to become United Empire Box Company Limited (U.E.B.) that grew to become a major N.Z. company. {see book – “From Bush & Swamp”, pages 184 to 188 for brief history of the companies} Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 186, with caption - Some of the damaged machinery, vehicles and general debris after the fire that swept through the United Empire Box Company’s factory. b) United Box Company Ltd. factory (Nathan Terrace) destroyed by fire, 1957. {copy} Unidentified man uses a hose to dampen down hot spots in the remains of the destroyed building. (see also – Acc.#s2001.011.0004 additional copy)

d) United Box Company Ltd. factory (Nathan Terrace) destroyed by fire, 1957. {copy} Building well ablaze and almost completely destroyed in the early morning of 18 September 1957. Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 186, with caption - The Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade tried desperately to save the United Empire Box company’s factory from total destruction in 1957, and managed to save some parts of the building. (see also – Acc.#s2002.075.0002 additional copy)

e) Smoke pours from the former Renown Theatre, Ballance Street, 1973. {copy} Building was leased and occupied by Zodiac Knitting Mills, the fire caused the business to close. Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 219, with caption - Fire destroyed what was once the Renown Theatre in 1973. Although Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade fought hard, it was totally destroyed. It had closed as a picture theatre in 1970, and was in use as a clothing factory when burned out. Smoke is seen pouring from either side of the projection box and from under the verandah.

f) Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade crash rescue display (at Gala Day ?), 1970’s ? {original ?} Members of the brigade working on wrecked car on back of truck with various pieces of equipment.
