CASSELS Mrs W

President Levin Red Cross 1965-1968

Mrs Cassels joined the Levin Red Cross in 1961. When Civil Defence was started in 1963 she was made convenor for the Levin Red Cross unit. Mrs Cassels attended all meetings on their behalf and reported progress.

In 1964 an afternoon tea was given for her at Mrs Wilson's home as a farewell on her forthcoming journey to England. She carried a letter of introduction to Red Cross Headquarters in London.

On the retirement of the President, Mrs Hudson, Mrs Cassels was elected president in 1965.

At the annual meeting in April it was proposed, seconded and carried that the position of president be of two years duration, but as no president was available in 1967, Mrs Cassels consented to carry on for another year.

To Mrs Cassels fell the honour of the 25 year Jubilee celebrations, which entailed heavy work delving into the past to find those who would be honoured at the celebrations and all the planning for the day itself.

Her next achievement was the setting-up of the Volunteer Aid Dvn 1966, which caused her great pleasure in the way the VADs set to work and sat for their first exam. All passed, ten with honours.

In 1967 it was decided to build a large room on to the main building to house the VADs and this was completed in November 1967. Mrs Cassels with the help of a committee planned the room and watched over its erection week by week.

Mrs Cassels took a great interest in the Junior Red Cross and the setting up of branches in the schools.

Arrangements were made by Mrs Cassels for the visit of the mobile cancer unit to Levin. Red Cross receptionists were supplied for the mobile unit.
