The cart is a fully enclosed wooden structure to protect the goods from direct sun, the weather and road dust etc., with an iron rail around the top allowing additional goods to be carried when required. Access to the goods is through the rear, with the tail-gate / door used as a work bench.
Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 46, with caption - The Richardson family were among the early settlers in Shannon, and for a time operated a butcher shop on the corner of Ballance Street and Plimmer Terrace. Meat deliveries were made over a wide area by horse and cart at the turn of the century. Here the meat is arriving at a farm house, and the remains of the burned out bush can be seen on the hillside. The sixth generation of the Richardson family is now growing up in Shannon. {1987}
