Left Column (top to bottom) - a) Plimmer Terrace, Shannon c.1920. {copy} Looking south along the eastern side of Plimmer Terrace, shows the Bank of New Zealand (left) with several children, W. H. Gunning’s General Store, Post Office (centre distance) and the Club Hotel (far distance, right). (see also – Acc.#s2001.013.0003 original postcard) (see also – Acc.#s2002.072.0010 additional copy)
b) Plimmer Terrace looking north, 1912. {copy} Some of the buildings (L -R): W.H. Gunning, Fargher & Co., Post Office. Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 52, with caption - A view of Plimmer Terrace c.1912. The original Albion Hotel still standing in the far left of the photograph, and there are a number of business premises in the dip between the Albion and Gunning’s store. Right Column (top to bottom) - e) ‘View of Shannon (Plimmer Terrace) from the Railway Station’, c.1900. {copy} Near Stout Street with business premises of W.H. Gunning (centre) and Dunckley & Co. (right). Roach’s Bakery believed to be 1st building at far left. Note Percy Nation Memorial in original position (beside fence, centre) it was later moved further south, and in 2001 was moved to gardens opposite Ballance Street. Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 51, with caption - This View of Plimmer Terrace from the railway station was taken in the early twentieth century. The premises of Dunckley and Company and W.H. Gunning Limited are still standing, but most of the shops north of Gunning’s have disappeared, mainly the victims of fire. f) ‘First talking pictures shown in Shannon 28th August 1930’. {copy} Large group of children assembled in front of the Renown Theatre (previously known as the Maoriland Theatre). The odd structure attached to the front of the 2nd storey (above the verandah) is the new projection box that had to be constructed to accommodate the equipment for showing the talking pictures. Information on page 143 in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, states: ... The first ‘talking picture’ to be shown was Rookery Nook, on 28 August 1930, and the theatre was renamed the Renown about this time. g) Plimmer Terrace looking south from Albion Hotel, 1894. {copy} Building that will become Roach’s 1st Bakery to the left of the group of horses. Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 50, with caption - Plimmer Terrace looking south from the Albion Hotel to the Club Hotel in the distance in 1894. It was about this time that the commercial premises began to move away from Nathan Terrace. (see also – Acc.#s2002.072.0006 additional copies)
