When borough gas manager Mr L. Metcalfe tapped into the main pipeline from Kapuni's natural gas field in November 1970, he opened the way for the towns struggling, subsidised gas department to become a million-dollar business.

Photo: Demolition of old gasometers at Levin gasworks followed the change to natural gas in 1970-71.
