TODAY is World Smile Day and PSIS Levin is getting into the spirit of the day by donating three park benches and a shade tree for the town's Adventure Park.

"We wanted to do something for the day to make people smile, but we also wanted to do something lasting," PSIS Levin branch manager Brian Hopper said when presenting the benches to Adventure Park Trust.

"The Adventure Park is enthusiastically used by families, groups and visitors to Levin. We thought a contribution to the landscaping and comfort of park users was a good way to celebrate this day."

Mr Hooper says playing an active role in its communities is in tune with PSIS's position as a community and customer-focused organisation.

"Our commitment to taking care of people has been consistently pr9v-en throughout our 75-year history and it is what makes PSIS the respected personal banking provider it is today," he says.

Levin Adventure Park Charitable Trust trustee Helen Blake says the donation of the seats by PSIS is another example of the wonderful community support the park has received.

"It certainly put a smile on the trustees' faces and I know they will be truly appreciated as we move towards our third successful summer," she says.

"I know there will be literally hundreds of people in the months ahead who will enjoy these new additions to our park."

World Smile Day is a day dedicated to good cheer and good works. The catch phrase of the day is, "Do an act of kindness—help one person smile".

The symbol of the day is Smiley, the yellow disc with the two eyes and big smile that is now known universally as the symbol of happiness.

American Harvey Ball, who created the smiley face for an insurance company that asked him to design something that would help improve employee morale, instigated the day. He designed Smiley and put him on a button that was distributed to the staff.

Mr Ball established World Smile Day to celebrate Smiley's message of goodwill and good cheer. The World Smile Corporation donates all its proceeds to charities whose mission is to serve the needs of children.
