The Evening Post of 20 May 1918 reported:
Fires
Two Premises At Levin Destroyed.
A fire on Sunday morning destroyed F. W. Martin's boot store and Grey Phillip's offices, and damaged Williams' refreshment rooms to the extent of £200. Martin's and Phillip's places are a total loss. The former's stock was insured for £550; the latter had no insurance. The building, which belongs to the Borough Council, was insured for £200. Williams was also covered by insurance.
