Sunday, November 8, 1936 was a memorable day for the [ Levin - Waiopehu Tramping ] club. It saw the opening of the Ohau Hut, which was reconstructed after the February 1936 storm.

Over 60 trampers attended the function and the hut was declared oficially open by the first president of the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ, Mr F.W. Vosseler.

The Waiopehu Track was one of the first established by the Levin-Waiopehu Tramping Club in the Tararua Ranges.

After much hard work, these members were well entitled to look pleased with themselves, little knowing that a few years later their work would be destroyed in a storm.

Search and rescue:

Search and rescue has always played a major partin the role of the Levin-Waiopehu Tramping Club. Its beginnings were founded out of the concern for trampers who had been overdue in the ranges and searches were mounted.

Tracks cut through the ranges:

One of the major accomplishments of the Levin-Waiopehu Tramping Club has benn the cutting of tracks through the ranges.

Tramping club:

The Levin-Waiopehu Tramping Club was formed on May 11, 1927, at a meeting called by Mr H.G. Kerslake of the (then) Levin Chronicle and Mr G. Leslie Adkin, farmer and later author of "Horowhenua".

Forest and bird society:

Mr E.Dear the chairman of the Manawatu section called a meeting in Otaki of those interested in forming a branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Society in August 1964 at which the president (Mr R.C. Nelson) spoke.
