Shannon School Diary 1970 - 1979

  • 2 February 1970: Mr R.C. Scott commenced duties as Principal.
  • 20 October 1970: N.Z. Army Band performed in school grounds.
  • 2 Decmeber 1970: Prefab classroom added to relieve crowded classrooms.
  • 1 December 1970: School roll 496.
  • 2 February 1971: New sound system installed allowing inter-communication to all classrooms-an excellent P.T.A. effort.
  • 19 July 1971: Palmerston North Teacher's College students commenced.
  • 17 August 1971: Operetta "Aladdin" performed by school in Memorial Hall.
  • 11 November 1971: Second school house for deputy principal placed on site by Keith Hay Homes.
  • 23 February 1972: Demolition commenced of old 'outside' boys and girls toilets.
  • 22 March 1972: Old Harco heaters replaced by modern Kent Heaters.
  • 17 April 1972; Commenced bulldozing in horse paddock to make junior playground.
  • 10 August 1972: Operetta, " Wizard of Oz' performed in Memorial Hall.
  • 16 October 1972: Painters commenced painting exteriors of all buildings.
  • 6 March 1973: Public meeting rejected taking of FI and FII pupils to an intermediate in Foxton.
  • 23 Mrch 1973: New Classroon (7), staffroom, library, resource rooms and remodelling of Administration Block completed.
  • 5 April 1973: Shannon School placed 11th for whole of N.Z. in P.O.S.B. for 1972 with 12165 deposits.
  • 12 June 1973: Public meeting to form 85th Jubilee on Queens Birthday 1974.
  • 5 July 1973: Commenced organising Central Library for whole school aided by School Library Service.
  • 10 November 1973: School Committee completed fencinf of horse paddock for junior playground.
  • 30 May-2 June 1974: 85th Jubilee Celebrations.
  • 30 May 1974: 7 Bus loads of children to pictures in Foxton as a jubilee treat.
  • 31 May 1974: 85th Jubilee Celebrations-School closed- School committee Holiday- Jubilee Ball at night, 450 attended. Rooms 7,8,9 used as supper rooms.
  • 1 June 1974: 12.30p.m. Parade. 1p.m. Roll Call, photos, offical addresses and after-noon tea, 2000 present.
  • 2 June 1974: Church service 2p.m. in Old Folks Hall. Afternnon tea at the Fire Station.
  • 18 October 1974: Buckley bus accident on Highway 57 outside Duncan's- no one hurt.
  • 23 September 1975: At 12.45p.m. the sub switch board in the Administration Block blew and began smoking furiously. The fire brigade was called but damaged.
  • 20 October 1975: Mrs Nancy Freakly--- Teacher Aide---- responsible for stting up library---- died at her home.
  • 21 June 1976: Snow fell in School playground.
  • 20 October 1976: Okunui bus involved in accident on corner of Kingston Road, no-one hurt.
  • 6 May 1977: Miss Margaret Hennessy retired after 18 years continuous teaching service at Shannon School as Senior Teacher. A Farewell and presentation were held in Memorial Hall.
  • 12 August 1977: First inter-school cross country held at Foxton Beach involving 11 schools.
  • 20 April 1978; New heating system completed.
  • 15 December 1978: Farewell---Mr T. Easton, Mr G. McDonald (Yr1), Miss L. Truebridge, Mr R. Cunnliffe, Mrs McMichael, Mr Scott, MrsPhillips and Miss Smith (Cleaner).
  • 7 June 1979: Sadly the passing of Mrs M. Hennessy.
  • 11 November 1979: 218 children to film 'Watership Down' in Palmerston North.
