Mr Hans Christian Oersted (b.1771 – d.1851) [sometimes spelt – Orsted] 1 B&W photo print
The unit of magnetic field strength, the “Oersted” is named in his honour. (Sometimes confused with the unit of magnetic induction, the “Gauss”). 1820 discovered magnetic needle is deflected by electric current flowing through a wire – which helped inspire the development of electromagnetic theory.
