In May of 2011 Levin library hosted a series of local amateur musicians to celebrate Music Month

Sol Jones

Our first musician was Sol Jones, an accomplished young acoustic guitarist who played for us on the morning of Wednesday 18th to the delight of everyone who was in the library. Sol plays Classical Gas

Sam Mahuinga and friends

The next morning, Thursday 19th Sam Mahuinga and his friends came in to sing for us.

Their beautiful harmonies enchanted our library users of all ages. Our visiting school class of first year students just walked in and sat down in front of the muscians to listen, instead of racing upstairs to the Children's library as they normally would do.

The Ukuladies

Later that day the Levin Ukulele ladies, "the Ukuladies" held their practise night in the Library from 4.15pm. This was a very informal session with about 10 people all with different skill levels. Real music for fun! This group usually meets fortnightly at Whispers for a practise session.

Ladies from left to right - Helen Harrison, Jill Roddick, Barbara Lucas, Denise Newton, Rona Cooper, Yo Watson, Ali Taylor, Trish Munro and Deb Hadlum

Having fun with the music - Keep on the Sunny side

Stasys Kulvis on violin

Friday afternoon we had the pleasure of listening to Stasys Kulvis, a talented young violinist. Stasys commented that the acoustics in the library were 'better than at home". He treated us to almost an hour of music which floated throughout the library.

John Fraser

On the afternoon of Tuesday 24th John Fraser, acoustic guitarist, played and sang for us. We are getting so used to having muscians in the library that it seems really odd and very quiet when they leave. Some of our younger staff members urged John to come back and play with them on Friday.

On Wednesday morning we were entertained by Chris Lloyd singing country music that many of our library patrons recognised and enjoyed.

All together we had a great fortnight and look forward to hearing more music in the library.
