Karanga-hiku kainga. A former native village on the right bank of the Manawatu river, two and a half miles north-west of the present town of Shannon.
It was situated in the concavity of a very acute meander.
The name and former site was received from Mere Hearse (Mrs Poaneki) of the Ngati-Whakatere hapu- a valued informant who supplied a large number of names of bygone Manawatu river-bank native settlements.
