Club Rules and Code of Conduct

Studio Manners

Don't touch anyone else's unfinished work if at all possible. If it's unavoidable, please be very careful, and confess up to any accidents. It's a simple courtesy to leave an apology note explaining a mishap.

Visitors

Many pottery ingredients are a health hazard. All visitors need to be aware of the potential hazards. Children especially should be made aware that they can "look–but–don't–touch", and they should never be left unsupervised upstairs or down. There are toxic chemicals everywhere in the clubrooms.

If other members are present, the clubrooms is not a place for pets – they don't understand either the rules or the hazards.

Clean up

Clean up after yourself – we don't have a cleaner. This means every single item you may have touched during a pottery session: benchtops, wheel, sponges, cloths, basins, brushes, club tools, extruder and template discs, slab roller tabletop and canvas sheets, and moulds (please wipe these gently – don't scrub them). And of course if you've had a drink or food, you'll clean the bench, sink, wash mugs, plates and cutlery. If the towels are looking worse for wear, please take a couple home and wash them. Ditto the canvas sheets.

Clean air

Dry clay dust is very bad for your lungs and everyone else's. Don't sweep the floors with a dry broom. Use a wet mop, or the club's vacuum cleaner. If the floors look clean, It's because a club member has sacrificed creative potting time to clean them. If you must sand a dry pot, do it outside – and you are strongly advised to wear a disposable dust mask while you're doing it. We sell them at cost price – 50c each.

No Blocked Drains

We have both a sink and a tub downstairs in the clubroom. Only the tub is equipped with a clay trap. Please don't wash any clayey equipment in the sink, and don't pour any clayey water down the sink. Use only the tub for clay.

Carpark

One of the carparks outside is designated for club use. You are welcome to use it to unload heavy or bulky things, but please move your car out to the street after you have unloaded so that it is free for the next person to do the same. It is also a longstanding courtesy that the carpark is available for any tutor of any class being held.

Materials

The club buys clay in bulk for the convenience of its members. All clay must be paid for at the time it is purchased – no IOUs, please. Clay is $23 a bag to members, $26 to non-members for a 20kg bag, unless the bag is marked differently. When buying clay, please record the bag number you are taking in the register in the clay storeroom, and make your payment in an envelope.

The club also provides glazes and slips for the use of members, and raw ingredients if anyone wants to try their hand at making a new glaze for the club.

  • There are commercial coloured underglaze stains in the cabinet by the door into the kiln room. Most of these are intended for application to bisqued pots.

  • Slips in various colours, intended for application to leatherhard pots are found in the shelves in northeast corner.
