Tararua Forest Park
Kete Horowhenua2020-03-23T16:49:52+00:00The 120,000ha Tararua Forest Park offers tramping and hunting opportunities at the back door of the urban communities of Wellington, Wairarapa, Horowhenua and Manawatu.
Location | North Island, New Zealand: extending from the Manawatu Gorge in the north to the Rimutaka Saddle in the south. |
Extending from the Manawatu Gorge in the north to the Rimutaka Saddle in the south, it was the first forest park to be established by the former New Zealand Forest Service in 1954, primarily for forest, water and soil conservation and public recreation.
The Tararua range is a rugged landscape comprising a mountainous core with most peaks ranging from 1400m to 1550m). The highest are Mitre (1571m) and Mt Hector (1529m).
It has a notorious reputation for severe mountain weather, acting as a barrier to the north-westerly gales sweeping through Cook Strait as well as being exposed to cold southerly winds during winter. Mist is a constant sub-alpine companion of Tararua trampers, demanding a high level of navigational skill.
