Kaikai kainga. A former native village, complete with meeting house and whare(s), situated on the south-western shore of Kaikai Lagoon.

The former Ngati-Huia inhabitants of Kaikai were primarily engaged in the capture of eels in the adjacent and the other nearby lagoons.

According to my informant, Poawha Hirini, of Poroutawhao (Porotawhao), the eels were so plentiful in Kaikai Lagoon that their capture was accomplished simply by setting hinaki (eel-pots or eel basket-traps) in the lagoon without weirs to guide the creatures into the baskets.

In most cases, however, in Horo-whenua where eels were taken in lagoons with the hinaki, the zig-zag weir known as rau-matangi was the device utilized to facilitate capture.
