Early settlers in Levin not lucky enough to be near one of the few springs around the town found water a problem.
 | Friday, January 20, 1961 ... Mayor Mr E.W. Wise opens the valves to bring gravity-fed water back into the Levin water supply after reconstruction of the headworks. Water was electrically-pumped from filters in the Ohau River while construction was going on. The job, which was started late in 1959, was an arduous task designed to clean up the water, and cost about 7000 pounds. |

Sheep brought fame to town:
Early in the 1970's, Levin's best-known personalities were a mixed batch of highly-pedigree sheep, with the amazing ability to walk up on stage to the cue of a commentator.
