Some Changes Over The Years...

By the late 1940's the Home was too small as there were up to five and six patients consistently.

The District Nurses house was built in White Street, which freed up space...

The Staff cottage was built early in the 1950's which relieved congestion in the main building, allowing room for six permanent beds, and two emergency beds.

The post war baby boom birth rate continued increasing.

Extensions built during the 1960's included a sterilizing room, a utility room, patients' toilet and shower facilities, plus alterations to the bathroom.

In 1970, the Maternity Home was shut down for staff holidays from December 21st until January 11th. Any remaining patients were transferred to Levin Maternity Hospital by ambulance. Patients booked for delivery were notified to attend Levin Maternity Hospital.

Security: The Foxton Police Department were notified and keys left there.

Sister-in Charge: (Mrs J S Jeffreys) to collect keys on recommencement of Maternity Hospital.

Foxton Fire Service was notified-Electricity turned off.

The Surf Club's resuscitator equipment was uplifted by them during closure.

Perishable foods were collected by Palmerston North Hospital truck.

Laundry and uniforms were sent to Levin.

Staff: Aids: Betty and Richardson. Sister Thompson, Sister Lash, Mrs Tiley, Miss Skellen, Mrs Cocks, Mr Simmons.

Meals on Wheels were to continue.

Because of only three bookings for January 1973, and the Sister-in-Charge not available, it was decided to shut down the Maternity Home for Staff holidays
