Rail linked with development:

Railways can sometimes be linked to an umbilical cord through New Zealand, linking outlying areas to 'the mother country'.

The steam train was once a common sight through Levin but
diesel-electrics replaced them in the early 60s.
Here is the last working steam engine to bring a train through Levin.

Wooden carriages and a smoking engine mark this old picture taken at
Queen Street crossing as being in the 20s era or even earlier.

The day the new shunting engine came to town - in June 1957.

Traffic assistants pictures with the new machine were
J. Bilderbeck, N. McGinn, L. Pope.

In the cab is Cadet G. Abrahams.
