Levin for Progress
Borough councillor, amateur dramatist, musician and promoter of Levin-that was the late Ken Aitken who died in 1972. He it was who nearly 60 years ago persuaded the Chamber of Commerce to take a full page advertisement in the Dominion extolling the virtues of this town. A reproduction of the advertisement is shown here.
The centre building in this picture is the old town hall, demolished in 1942 to make way for the district nurses' rooms. At left is the old Bank of NZ building and at right the Bank of ANZ, both serving different purposes now.It was only in 1942 that Levin lost one of its old landmarks known as the Town Hall. This was situated in Queen Street West, next to the Bank of New Zealand, where the district nurses' rooms now stand.
In the year it was demolished the building was said to be 46 years old, having been built when Levin was under the control of the Waitarere Road Board. It was built by Mr Laurence Williamson for Mr T.G. Garland. The original Town Hall was in Oxford Street, next to the Levin Hotel. This was burnt down in a disastrous. After the fire the only remaining halls were the Temperance Hall, which was too small, and the other hall which was to be used as the town hall and which had not long been erected.
