Jack Butler's words just before the crash
Kete Horowhenua2020-03-23T17:03:09+00:00This is what my Dad had too say about the crash of his monoplane and why it happened I found this in the box a lot later in his writing:
The final crash was due to my inexperience. My difficulty in getting the plane off the ground proved to be that I was attempting to lift off by using the stick before gaining sufficient forward speed. After numerous failures I held the stick forward and allowed the bird to gather maximum speed and at this stage the plane rose easily and climbed quickly to my estimated 1000 feet.
At this attitude I flew up and down the beach several times and then noticed that the radiator was boiling furiously and then I decided to land.
Mr Carpenter a person watching said after watching for fifteen to twenty minutes Jacks machine seemed to leave a long vapour trail out behind (not speed but steam) Mr Carpenter said he remembers he was hoping Dad would come down before the kite got to hot. Dad then said after throttling hard his plane appeared to be coming down for a normal landing but it in fact was dropping vertically as told by people watching at a later date.
Dad said he only knew this later when I was near too the ground "Dads words I pushed the stick forward to glide but instead this caused the plane to dive for the ground.
Attempts too come out of the dive were just too late and the wheels hit the beach. My plane bounces bounced and fell back and the fuselage broke at the cockpit allowing engine and wing too falls forward.
It was good that I escaped without injury.
