BURIED AT HIS MOTHER’S
BIRTHPLACE.

FORMER LEVIN BOY KILLED ON
ACTIVE SERVICE

The following article appeared in an English paper, the “Ilford Recorder,” on
March 8th, 1945.
“A New Zealand Royal Air Force Flying Officer was buried on Tuesday in Ilford,
where his mother lived, and was married during the last war before going to New
Zealand.
“He was Flying Officer Humphrey N. Thorpe, and he was buried at Barkingside
Cemetery. He was 21 years of age, and had been in England 18 months, first training and
later for operations over the Continent. It was on one of these operations that he lost his
life.
“His mother was Miss Winifred Webb, and she lived in Ilford, before marrying a
New Zealand soldier, in 1918. In 1919 she and her husband went to New Zealand, and
are now living in Auckland.”
Flying Office Thorpe was a former resident of Levin, having finished his
education at Horowhenua College. For two years prior to his entry into the R.N.Z.A.F.
he was employed at the Levin Dairy Company.
