- Description
Jockey hid:
Jockeys hiding horses in the bush, packing case starters, these are some aspects of the early race meetings recalled by Levin's Mr R. S. Welby, aged 88.
Flashbacks to early meetings:
Notes from early racing days in Levin have special interest, with the centenary of racing in this district coming close.
"The Wellington-Manawatu railway was the first in the Southern Hemisphere to have carriages electrically lit from generators run off the axles. The apparatus was installed in 1896 and was fairly successful, but was rather complicated for ordinary users. The company disgarded the generator and automatic switch gear and lit its passenger trains with electricity supplied by accumulators in the guard's vans-From a railways publicaton".
