This is a diary of the great day trips and tramps that we have discovered in and around Horowhenua.

Introduction

When I first moved out to Waitarere beach in 2003, when we got our dog Phoebe, I used to walk 5kms most mornings. Then I had a bad tear of my right achilles tendon / calf muscle which saw me in a plaster cast for 6 weeks. After a many months, another tear, 2 cortisone injections for achilles tendonitis and finally surgery to ease the pain, I ended up snapping the tendon completely. More surgery, 5 months of plaster casts, 3 months of intensive physio and I am now - 2 years later - determined to get my physical strength back to a normal level.

The Plan

The initial plan involves walking to Trig on Tuesday nights and attending a pilates class on Thursday nights to easeout the kinks. This is working splendidly. I would like to extend my activities out to weekend day trips into the foothills of the Tararuas. I loved tramping as a teenager and my ultimate goal is to get back into regular tramping again.

I am very fortunate to be supported in my attempts by my lovely friends at Levin Library and my great kids.

While all of these trips are well known to locals I didn't know of them and had trouble finding information about them. The point of this topic is to share the day walks that we discover are lurking right on Horowhenua's back doorstep and to record the trips with photographs.
