The Hawera and Normanby Star of 14 January 1924 reported:
Fertiliser works destroyed.
A serious fire occurred Just before midnight, by which manure works owned by J. M. Milne at Poroutawhao were completely destroyed. 'No work had been carried on for several days at the works and the fire was discovered by the caretaker, but owing to the restricted water supply little could "be done to combat the flames. The insurances were £4000 in the Alliance office. The estimated value of the works and plant was between £7000 and £8000.
