Over 100 people attended the on site civic reception and guests included Otaki MP Judy Keall, Horowhenua district councillors and the many supporters of the playground.

The playground, on the old Levin School site in Oxford Street, features a variety of play equipment to cater for young and old.

It includes a tiny tots play-ground, beach volleyball court, skating rink, fitness trail, jungle gym, flying fox, public toilets and indoor and outdoor picnic facilities.

The playground is the brainchild of Levin couple Collis and Helen Blake.

They originally came up with the idea in January this year and have only been building on the site since April.

Mr Blake has leased the park site for 20 years from the Office of Treaty Settlements.

He says the support he has received has been phenomenal and the park never would have been built without the assistance he received.

He says the community has really got behind the project with individuals, community groups and businesses all making financial contributions.

Some of the local contributors include Contact Energy who gave $60,000. Nothing but Wheels who donated $5000 for the skating rink, the Levin Altrusa club, who contributed towards the tiny tots playground, and the Levin Rotary Club who assisted with the fitness trail.

So far $250,000 has been spent on the park and an additional $50,000 is expected to be spent when other features are added in the upcoming months.

Mr Blake says the materials used were of the highest quality and a lot of time and effort was put into the design of the park.

He says the park will be a huge asset to the Levin community and local children were already using the facilities before the opening.

Community support pays off with park Photo: A broken arm does not deter Nathan Harding from enjoying the tiny tots playground.
