They were the well-known Adkin family and another well-known family named Herd. Mrs J. Aitchison (nee Law) identified those in the picture published in the Hydrabad supplement, produced above. The two families were friends and often used to ride out to Waitarere for picnics near the wreck. Mrs Aitchison said the boy paddling in the surf at left is CIiffAdkin who resides in Queen Street, Levin. In the back row of the group on horseback from left to right are -Gilbert Adkin, a Mr Jimmy Cameron, Reg Thurlow, Dora Adkin (Mrs Aitchison's mother, Mrs R. J. Law, Te Rohenga, Shannon), and Will Herd, two girls on a horse named 'Bonnie' are Marjorie Adkin (Mrs Broomfield, now of Wellesley Haven, Naenae). Front row: Miss Nairn, Alice Herd, Olive Herd, Mr W. G. Adkin (the late Mr Adkin was Mrs Aitchison's grandfather), Maud Herd (Mrs Leslie Adkin), Claire Adkin (Mrs Gardner, Horowhenua Hospital, and now in her 80s), Ralph Herd, Kate Denton (aunt of Mr R. B. Denton), Viv Adkin (New Plymouth) and boy with hand to hat,) John Herd, Mrs Herd senior and Mr Herd senior and small boy Hugh Herd. Mr Gilbert Adkin the man on horseback at left was killed in World War I. The picture was taken by the late Mr G. Leslie Adkin.
