Description

Biologists A Packard and Dr R Balham cut a hole through ice on Lake Vida.

Dr Balham was part of the British Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (BCTAE) which completed the first overland crossing of the Antarctic Continent from the Weddell Sea, via the South Pole, to McMurdo Sound, in 1957.
