| One of the big crowds at Levin races, the winter meeting of 1955. The history of the club pre-dates that of Levin, going back to 1884 when it was known as the Horowhenua Racing Club, subsequently the Horowhenua Hack Racing Club. The change of name to the Levin Racing Club came aout in 1923. |

The sport of racing moved into this district with the early settlers, and the sandy stretch of Hokio Beach formed the first race track. The McDonald family also held meetings about half a mile north of Lake Horowhenua.
