Gunnings Stores, Shannon and Tokomaru
- Description
GUNNING'S STORES.
Shannon.and Tokomaru.
That some of Shannon's business houses compare more than favourably with the largest in some of the bigger centres, will be evident to anyone inspecting that fine, up-to-date store of Mr. W. H. Gunning's, which is situated on Plimmer Terrace, and facing the railway. The frontage of this establishment does not by any means convey an approximate idea of its extensive ramifications, and trade. It is the interior that strikes the visitor with astonishment, for here is to be seen a very large stock of general goods imported direct from the best markets, and sold to clients in town and country at prices that are extremely low when quality is considered. Mr. Gunning's store was established in 1890, and as can be readily understood has proved of great service to the district, especially to struggling settlers in years past when there was no such thing as the separator, and the big connection this store has today amply proves that Mr. Gunning gives clients every satisfaction. A competent staff of assistants are constantly employed, and goods are delivered daily to any part of the district. Every care is taken to conserve the best interests of clients, and as a result the store is a very busy centre for the supply of all pertaining to groceries, ironmongery, boots, shoes, clothing, builders' materials, oilmen's goods, and general household requirements. Mr. Gunning has a branch store at Tokomaru, and this is rum on the same careful lines that characterises the Shannon business. Besides being a member of the newly-formed Borough Council, Mr. Gunning is one of the most progressive men of the district, and in his introduction of the electrical power scheme, and his advocacy of Shannon's claims in this direction, he has alone rendered the district a valuable service.
