Heavy Traffic passing through the township of Levin

For many years since i started my apprenticeship in Levin in the 1950's there has been talk about easing the traffic conjestion in Levins' main Street, "Oxford Street". In those days with no traffic lights it could be difficult moving around town. Trucks were getting bigger and longer, cattle trucks didn't have facilities to catch effluent which then spilt on to the roadway. Discussions started about having a by-pass around the town. And now after a sixty years wait it looks like this may happen. As a matter of interest, for histories sake, i have taken and entered a few photos about the traffic passing through Oxford Street in 2018.

Mayor hits out at traffic passing through Levin

( Mayor Hits out at Traffic passing through Levin ) as reported in the Horowhenua Mail news paper 9-3-2019. written by Jono Galuszka. Mayor Micheal Feyen says Levin has turned into a "sh...ville" due to clogged roads and shoddy road-works, and wants transport officials to do something about it.
State Highway 1 runs through the middle of Levin, with the speed limit dropping to 50 kmp and traffic forced to crawl through two sets or lights.
Although there is a well-used bypass-State Highway 57, also known as Arapaepae Road, to the east of town - it is difficult to get on or off it in the north of Levin.

Horowhenua mayor Micheal Feyen vented his frustration at the situation at Horizons Regional Council's regional transport committee this week.
He said congestion was making Levin a horrible place to drive.
Roadworks south of the town, including the Peka Peka to Otaki expressway and transmission Gully, were designed to relieve congestion. " There is work all over the country, but we have our bottle-neck in Levin," he said. " What do people hit? SH...ville. It's a national embarrassment."

While the New Zealand Transport Agency had plans to construct a highway from Otaki to north of Levin, linking in with southern projects, there was no official start date for construction, he said.
" We need a bypass put in."
The roadworks situation compounded the problem, with road sealing on SH1 north of Levin ripped up several times since Chistmas, he said.
Stuff could not see any road-works when on entry to Levin on SH 1 from the north on Wednesday, but there were road cones being taken away.
Horizons chairman Bruce Gordon said repair quality was also a problem in other parts of Horowhenua and Manawatu, and he wondered if someone from the agency checked the quality of contractors' work.
"Either the engineers are not up to scratch, or their briefs are wrong. " It is a huge waste of money."
Stuff has approached the transport agency about the issue, but is yet to get an interview or comment.

Saturday's Eminem gig, according to Horowhenua mayor
Michael Feyen after Levin was left gridlocked by motorists travelling in and out of Wellington.
Feyen said while he fully supported the capital hosted big name music artist, better planning was needed to avoid the survere congestion that saw bottleneck and grind to a halt in Otaki and Levin - 90 kilometres north of the city.

The Westpac Stadium gig drew a croad of 46,000 and while the event itself has been heralded as a success, drivers faced 90-minute delays on State Highway 1 on the Kapiti Coast.
Vehicles travelling through Paekakarriki towards Wellington increased by 20 per cent,compared to the two previous Saturdays. While there was a 26 per cent increase on Sunday as drivers headed out of the city.
Feyen said action needed to be taken before Wellington staged a similar Large- scale events in the future.
" My son was at the Eminem concert... Their home trip took four hours," he said.
"We need to look hard at this to avoid the same problems in the future".
"Ultimately, we need a bypass to send the traffic that is not going to Levin around the town".
NZTA Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen said NZTA now had valuable information to use in advising travellers and planning for future big events.
