The exact location is not known.
It is sometimes confused with Paretawa and is incorrectly shown on some maps where that trig station is situated north of Waikanae.
A pa was said to have been built at Kaitawa by Wi Tako and the people who accompanied him to Waikanae in 1860.
Hira Maika of the Puketapu and Kaitangata hapus said that Wi Parata had houses there. (Ngarara 1890)
