Shannon School Diary 1980's.....
30 April 1980: Mr G. Opie and Mr R. O'Leary with 57 St. 1 & 2 children commenced in the new 'variable teaching space' (V.T.S.)
17 October 1981: Inter-school corss country at Foxton. Shannon won with 80 points.
27 April 1981: Simulated fire drill, evacuation andFire Brigade as a star of "Fire Safety Week".
11 November 1981: Police Dog demonstration.
23 March 1982: Parent participation coffe morning.
6 September 1982: Teachers only Day-Maori programme through Language & Music.
30 November 1982: Special Parents Meeting-expressing concern over staffing and pupil/teacher ratio.
27 June 1983: Std. 1-4 visit to Poutu Marae.
18 June 1984: Visit Lands & Survey Display Trailer.
25 June 1984: Moutoa/Spring Road bus commence.
10 November 1984: Working bee to break up and remove concrete surround on big pool and end of small pool at the baths.
19 November 1984: Rm. 12 and Mrs Orme represented school at Drama Festival in Palmerston North.
25 June 1985: National Survey of Fitness of N.Z. school pupils- 9 Form II children took part with very impressive results.
31 October 1985: Miss Yvoone Te Peeti commenced as Special Teacher Aide for Moukite Etita.
4 November 1986: Kaiarahi Meeting attended by 59 people.
15 November 1986: Ceri Toland & Andrew Kelly entered into Lion's Young Cyclist of the year and won the school an Apple computer.
18 March 1987: Miss Yvonne Te Peeti appointed Kaiarahi Reo. Powhiri organised and led by Mr Rob Douthett.
8 May 1987: Visit, Russell Marshall, Minister or Education.
28 May 1987: School Committee and FII boys completed new drainage in the Adventure Playground.
31 July 1987: Visit David Lange, Prime Minister ans Annette King, M. P. Horowhenua.
9 December 1987: Public Farewell to Mr Rob Scott (Principal 1970-1987).
1 February 1988: Opening Roll 291. Mr G. Powell commenced as Acting Principal.
13 March 1988: School Closed-Teachers on strike in protest at the State Sector Bill.
23 May 1988: Mr M. Collins commenced as Principal.
23 June 1988: Samples of several pupils Art Work were put on display in Thompson House in Levin.
24 August 1988: Fifty pupils took part in the Gymnastics festival held at Manawatu College.
26 August 1988: During the term holidays the folloeing pupils were in representative teams:
Horowhenua Rugby Team- James Halls, Scott Robinson.
Horowhenua Under 11 Soccer Team- Bradford Powell.
Horowhenua Primary A Hockey Team- Jill Timms (Captain).
Horowhenua Primary B Hockey Team- Kendyl Hughes.
N.Z. Wrestling Championships- Ian Penn- Gold Medal.
17 October 1988: Annual Speech Competition- 1st Shona Forman, 2nd Jolene Mackay, 3rd Dion Wilkin.
1 November 1988: Shona Forman placed first in the Shannon Lions annual speech competition.
30 November 1988: A hail storm occured in Shannon- many windows smashed in the town. At the school 57 panes of glass were broken.
19 December 1988: Final Day of the school year- Roll number 324.
March 24-26 1989: Shannon School Centennial..
