It is described as:
Dune lake / Wetland. Lake margin vegetation largely reduced and subject to grazing in parts but contains representative elements of this habitat type - wetland habitat is nationally under-represented. Provides habitat for kapungawha and kereru.
The lake has played host to the World barefoot skiing championships.
