Tragedy struck in 1884 when Reginald Ransom was killed at the age of nineteen in an accident while working at Rongotea (then called Campbell Town). His death was reported in the newspaper, where his age was incorrectly given as twenty-two. His body was not returned home to Lower Hutt and he lies buried at Sanson cemetery.
FATAL ACCDENT AT CAMPBELL TOWN

Reginald Ransom, aged 22, brother of C.V. Ransom, settler, Campbell Town, was killed this morning. Deceased, with two others, was felling trees in Anderson’s bush Jones’- line, when a tree, which was being operated on, suddenly fell, crushing Ransom, and causing instantaneous death. Deceased was a fine, active young fellow and much respected in the district.
