The first stage of the journey from Wellington was over the hill at Paekakariki. From there the coach followed the coast and the way had to be traversed between the tides.
With many unbridged rivers to cross, the travellers faced many dangers along the route. Stopping places were situated along the route where there was usually an hotel where horses could be changed and mail bags delivered and collected. One hotel was situated at the mouth of the Ohau river, one at Hokio, and one at Foxton. The larger rivers such as the Manawatu were serviced with a punt. The coach service was twice weekly.
